APPM Graduate Recruitment - Ian Grooms
| Event Description: Ian Grooms, Department of Applied Mathematics, University of Colorado Boulder Multiscale Methods in Ocean Modeling Equations describing the motions of the ocean are reasonably well known, but numerical ocean models are unable to resolve all length scales. Rather than view numerical ocean models as hopelessly inaccurate approximations to the aforementioned equations, one should view them as approximations to the dynamics of the resolvable scales. But equations describing the motions of the resolvable scales are not reasonably well known. The development of models for nonlinear multiscale complex dynamical systems is squarely within the scope of Applied Mathematics, and represents a challenge to that discipline. This talk will describe a range of approaches to the development of analytical and computational models, from rigorous to formal to semi-empirical, describing the resolvable scales of the ocean. |
