Professor David Bortz has been awarded $750,000 through the U.S. Department of Energy's Genesis Mission, a national initiative uniting AI, supercomputing, quantum systems, and advanced scientific instruments to accelerate discovery. His Phase I project, Weak-Form Agentic Digital Twins for Real-Time Control of Magnetically Confined Fusion Systems Under Sparse Observation, develops physics-constrained, AI-driven digital twins that learn plasma dynamics from live sensor data and steer control decisions in real time — a step toward making fusion a practical source of abundant clean electricity. The award supports a multi-institutional collaboration with Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and Michigan State University.
