Program Overview

The Undergraduate Pre-Health Program (UPP) started in the spring of 2006; the Office of Inclusion and Outreach(OIO)Ìýat the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus hostsÌýthe year longÌýprogram. OIO isÌýcommitted to helping increase the number of historically underrepresented individuals within the health care professions for the purpose of reducing health disparities among underserved communities in Colorado.

By participating in the program studentsÌýlearn about health disparities, health policy and social justice issues that impact equity in healthcare. Courses are taught by distinguished University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus Ìýfaculty, staffÌýand students. TopicsÌýconsist of personal and professional development, lectures, demonstrations, andÌýinteractive presentations. The program is designed to allowÌýstudents to exploreÌýthe many facets of health care.Ìý

  • ​The program will start with a summer orientation to beÌýheld in August.Ìý
  • Saturday Academy workshops will be heldÌýmonthly during FallÌý- Spring, starting in August through May.Ìý
  • The summer portion of the program will take place May - July. The summer component will include a paid summer internship on the Anschutz Medical Campus (summer internship participation is contingent upon successful completion of Saturday Academies and positive evaluation ofÌýbehavior/performance).

During the summer portion of the program studentsÌýfoster a sense of togetherness, community, cohesiveness, and cooperative learning which is essential for their success in post-baccalaureate programs. Participants giveÌýformalÌýpresentations on their summer experience at a UPP End of Summer Colloquium. StudentsÌýformally and informally meet and are mentored by current medical students, pharmacy students, public health students, dental students and graduate students.Ìý

The program offers opportunities for students in career exploration from the Colorado School of Public Health, College of Nursing, School of Medicine, School of Pharmacy, Graduate School, and the School of Dental Medicine at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. Also, studentsÌýhave direct access to faculty, deans, and staff on the campus. StudentsÌýhave the opportunity to work inÌýboth clinical and scientific research, shadowingÌýhealthcare professionals,ÌýandÌýyear-round coaching.ÌýStudents are potentially provided with a scholarship to take a Kaplan Review Course prior to taking MCAT, GRE, PCAT and DAT. Special emphasis is placed on acquiringÌýletters of recommendations, writing personal statements, perfectingÌýinterview skills, and engaging inÌýmentoring opportunities and post-graduate program opportunities.Ìý

Eligibility

Students are selected on the basis of academic and professional achievement, and an interest inÌýhealthcare professions. We encourage students from underrepresented groups or backgroundsÌýincluding first-generation college attendee, low income/financial hardship, LGBTI, U.S. veterans, persons with a disability,ÌýorÌýethnic minoritiesÌýsuch as Black or African American, Hispanic, American Indian or Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander, and AsianÌýto apply.Ìý

  • Applicants must have 30 or more college creditsÌýbefore the start of the program.Ìý
  • Applicants must be full-time studentÌýthroughout the duration of the program.Ìý
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens or have Permanent Resident status. DACA recipients, DREMers and validÌýVisa holders can also apply.Ìý
  • Students are not permitted to work part-time jobs or take any additional classes (exceptions for online classes may be granted on an individual basis) during the summer portion of the program.
