Front the Department of Applied Psychology and Counselor Education at University of Northern Colorado:

We are currently conducting an IRB-approved study on how U.S. college students think about their future and engage in future-oriented coping. We are seeking participants who are 18 years of age or older and currently enrolled in a U.S. college or university.

Participation involves completing a brief (approximately 5-minute) online screening survey. If eligible, participants will be invited to a 1 to 1.5-hour interview conducted via Zoom. All responses will be kept confidential. As a token of appreciation, participants will receive a $45 Amazon e-gift card upon completing the interview.

Join GEOL/MCDB 3181 – Microbial Planet Lab with Dr. Seb Kopf

https://www.kopflab.org/this Fall for a hands-on, discovery-based research course where YOU conduct original experiments on soil-dwelling microbes—no prior lab experience required!

Microbes are everywhere—they're the invisible master chemists behind Earth's geochemical cycles, from breaking down rock and organic matter to influencing carbon flow and climate. The Wang Lab at CU Anschutz Medical Campus is looking for an undergraduate student to join us for a volunteer summer internship. Our lab's expertise is in the development of diphtheria toxin-based recombinant immunotoxins using a unique diphtheria toxin resistant yeast Pichia pastoris expression system, with our current focus being on targeted therapies for cancer. This internship would be a wonderful opportunity for anyone interested in research or medicine to gain hands on, in lab experience.

During this internship you will learn a variety of lab techniques, observe animal experiments, and possibly help with publications. We are looking for anyone who has a strong passion for science and desire to learn to apply. On behalf of the faculty at the Computational Health Informatics Program (CHIP) at Boston Children's Hospital & Harvard Medical School, we would like to extend an invitation for your students in college and graduate school to apply for the upcoming Summer 2025 internship as part of its inaugural cohort with a paid or course/thesis credit option (applications due February 28).

Our research at CHIP and the various faculty labs explore the intersection of medicine/bioinformatics, public health, the social sciences, and computation within a variety of fields such as AI/machine learning, natural language processing/LLMs, genomics, population health, regulatory science, technology development, data science driven social justice/political science, and more.

2 WEEK PROGRAM | COSTA RICA | SUMMER 2025

Created by a graduate from UC Santa Barbara - Bren School of Environmental Science & Management, BIOMA has provided to over one thousand university students worldwide with a two-week academic & high quality sea turtle experiential learning and hands-on research experience. Our participants collaborate side by side with experts to learn about sea turtle biology, ecology and management while doing impactful on-site conservation work and living in a local community.

Student teams (about 18 like-minded students per group), will build skills of real world application, boost their resume and knowledge while discovering incredible landscapes at Costa Rica’s Pacific sunshine coast.

The lab is in the Department of Surgery, Division of Urology and has a focus on the development of an ex vivo kidney circuit, kidney autotransplant surgeries, and cell work related to urologic diseases. This would be a great opportunity for an undergraduate student interested in medicine (specifically surgery), biomedical sciences, and/or bioengineering, and wishing to gain hands-on experience and mentorship in these fields.

Lab Profile:

Heiko Yang, MD, PhD

Research interests: The primary goal of my lab is to explore kidney biology using normothermic ex vivo perfusion. Sustaining human and porcine kidneys in a physiologic state outside the body provides a unique opportunity to study complex intercellular interactions, tease apart organ autonomous processes, and test organ-directed therapeutics.

Active projects:

Long-term normothermic ex vivo kidney perfusion. The current limit to normothermic ex vivo kidney perfusion is 24 hours. Extending beyond this limit would greatly increase the value of normothermic ex vivo kidney perfusion as a research tool to model kidney biology and as a clinical tool to extend the longevity of donor organs. To accomplish this, we will need to systematically define and overcome the technical and biological barriers that limit ex vivo kidney perfusion. We are thus working iteratively to extend the longevity of ex vivo kidney perfusion using our custom platform, and we have developed a porcine renal autotransplantion protocol to evaluate in vivo function of the kidney following ex vivo perfusion.

Whole-organ gene editing in the kidney. There are more than 500 monogenic causes of human kidney disease. Our long-term goal is to develop a kidney-directed gene editing strategy that can durably halt the progression of renal failure and provide a cure for such diseases. Understanding how to best target the kidney is a major challenge in gene therapy. Given the numerous technical and biological challenges associated with the developmentof targeted in vivo delivery (e.g. liver accumulation, off-target effects, and toxicity), we hypothesize that an ex vivo approach could be more effective. We envision that the future of kidney-directed gene therapy involves surgically removing a patient’s diseased kidney, performing gene editing of the kidney during ex vivo perfusion, and then implanting the genetically modified kidney back into the patient. The surgical aspects of this strategy are well-established; our present challenge is to determine how to perform gene editing in the kidney ex vivo.

Blood substitutes and alternative oxygen carriers for organ perfusion. There is a great need to develop an alternative to red blood cells as a life-sustaining oxygen carrier due to the scarcity of donor red blood cells (RBCs), their limited lifespan in storage (< 42 days at 4 oC), and contraindications that prohibit their use in many settings. Prior and ongoing attempts to use hemoglobin-based oxygen carriers (HBOCs) such as polymerized or lipid-encapsulated hemoglobin have had muted success to date as these products are unstable and costly to produce. To overcome this challenge, we have identified a naturally occurring acellular oxygen carrier that holds promise due its molecular stability, favorable oxygen-binding profile, and natural abundance. We aim to use normothermic ex vivo kidney perfusion to evaluate the organ-sustaining properties of this material and optimize a formulation for kidney perfusion. These studies will lead to the development of a blood substitute for organ perfusion. The eventual goal will be to further develop its use for life-saving transfusions.
