BSI Scholars Program is a funding and professional development program for current CU Boulder undergraduates. Eligible students conducting STEM research are paid to work in a laboratory on the CU Boulder or CU Denver Anschutz Medical Campus. Students also attend seminars to enhance the research experience and summarize their findings through a presentation at the end of the term. The student deadline is February 28^th.

BSI Scholar Ambassadors: This team of current undergraduate researchers can meet with prospective students one-on-one to offer advice and support on the benefits of getting involved with research, how to get started, as well as share information on the various research opportunities CU has to offer. Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU)

The NSF-supported Jornada Basin Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) program has opportunities for undergraduate students to participate in research during the summer of 2022. Each participant will develop a personalized project under the guidance of a suitable mentor associated with the Jornada LTER and/or New Mexico State University.

Successful applicants will be awarded a stipend of $8,000 for the summer field season (5/15 – 8/14) to cover stipend, living, and travel expenses. Activities will be conducted on the campus of NMSU with fieldwork at the Jornada research site northeast of Las Cruces, NM.

Applications will be evaluated upon submission, with priority given to those received before the deadline, and positions being filled as long as funding is available. Applications from underrepresented minorities are particularly encouraged. ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ�� the Jornada LTER

The Jornada Basin Long-Term Ecological Research Program is focused on the ecology of drylands in the southwest USA, including the causes and consequences of alternative ecosystem states and expansion of woody plants into grasslands.

We are interested in spatial and temporal variation in ecosystem dynamics, and how historic legacies, geomorphology, wind, water, climate, and land use interact with vegetation, soils, microbes, and animals to determine past, present, and future ecosystem states across different scales. We use a large suite of long-term ecological and climatic data to understand and predict these dynamics.

The Stowers Institute for Medical Research (Kansas City, Missouri) is now accepting applications for Stowers Research Scholars, a fully paid, mentored 1-year post-baccalaureate research fellowship. Through guided research experience and academic career mentoring, this program aims to increase the number of NIH-defined underrepresented students in fundamental biological research. This year we are accepting up to three students for the program beginning in June.

This opportunity is open to US citizens or permanent residents from diverse backgrounds with a BA or BS in a STEM field who are interested in pursuing graduate education in basic biological sciences. Selection preference will be given to members of communities traditionally underrepresented in STEM as defined by the NIH. Compensation is highly competitive and prior laboratory experience is not required. The Johnson Laboratory (http://www.johnsonlaboraotry.com) is accepting a qualified undergraduate NSF REU applicant for our field crew in the Bay Area of California beginning in May 9and concluding in early August 2022.

Proposed Project:
This project aims to understand how Bd transmission in wild populations of hosts is affected by drought. Students interested in this position will be station out in the Bay Area of California where our research into amphibian disease ecology has been focused for over 20 years. They will be stationed at the UC Reserve Blue Oaks Ranch, which provides housing, laboratory facilities, and a vibrant academic atmosphere. Students will work as part of our amphibian field team in throughout the summer in which they will use field and lab techniques (dip nets, seines, visual surveys, pathogen swabbing, snail dissection, data entry) to monitor and assess amphibian populations. The student will also gain valuable statistical analysis skills as they will use previously collected data from California’s mega drought (2020-2021) to gain an understanding to how Bd transmission is affected by drought. The student will work up a report for the funder and hopefully then submit the work for publication. If grant is funded, the selected student will be provided a $6,000 summer stipend spread across the three months of work. Housing, supplies for research project, and travel are included as well. Please not selected student must be able to start in CA on or before May 9th, 2022.

We are looking for independent, self-motivated undergraduate students who are passionate about pursuing research in aquatic ecology and conservation to apply for funding provided by UROP at ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ��.

Currently we are exploring the following three projects for summer UROP positions:

Students will work as part of our amphibian field team in which they will use field and lab techniques (dip nets, seines, visual surveys, pathogen swabbing, snail dissection, data entry) to monitor and assess amphibian populations.

2. Bd vaccine development (FIELD): this project aims to understand if Bd resistance be induced in wild populations of hosts within an aquatic community. Students interested in this position will be station out in the Bay Area of California from May-mid August. Students will work as part of our amphibian field team in the first half of the summer in which they will use field and lab techniques (dip nets, seines, visual surveys, pathogen swabbing, snail dissection, data entry) to monitor and assess amphibian populations. The second part of the summer will primarily focus on assisting a Phd candidate in assess Bd in experimental ponds by swabbing larval and adult amphibians.

3. Parasite disease in amphibians (LAB): this project aims to understand how interactions among species within an aquatic community collectively influence pathogen transmission and disease risk. Students interested in this position will be working in the Johnson Laboratory here at CU starting in May through beginning of August. Students will work as part of our amphibian necropsy and husbandry team in which they will dissect various amphibians to test for various pathogens—like the trematode that causes frogs to grow multiple legs!

Undergraduate Research Experience

To advance climate adaptation science and increase diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM fields, the Climate Adaptation Scientists of Tomorrow Program brings undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty together with CASC partners to cultivate the next generation of climate scientists.

Program Locations:

· Auburn University: Located in Auburn, Alabama, participants in this program will focus on climate impacts on water systems in the Gulf of Mexico upland watersheds. Each student will be paired with two faculty mentors and a graduate-student mentor to provide guidance throughout the summer. In addition to undertaking their own research, participants will share programming with participants at Louisiana State University and participate in a culminating research symposium.

· Louisiana State University: Located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, participants at this location will focus their research on climate impacts on the water systems of coastal environments. Mentoring will be provided by faculty scholars and a cohort of graduate students. In addition to undertaking their own research, participants will share programming with participants at Auburn University and participate in a culminating research symposium in Auburn, Alabama.

· University of Colorado, Boulder: Located in Boulder, Colorado, participants at this location will partner with regional Tribal Colleges and Universities to advance inclusion of Indigenous perspectives in climate adaptation science. Undergraduates will receive one-to-one mentorship from an on-campus graduate student and faculty member. The participants will work with identified mentors to identify relevant research projects and engage with other on-campus programs to gain experience in the field.

· University of Massachusetts Amherst: Located in Amherst, Massachusetts, participants will join a center with existing programs to expand the perspectives in climate adaptation research. The undergraduates will receive mentoring from other undergraduate programs, dedicated graduate students, and faculty scientists. In consultation with faculty, the participants to contribute to existing research projects focused on invasion ecology, biogeography, coastal hazards or climate change ecology.

Undergraduate Research Experience, Features and Benefits:

Program provides 10 weeks of room and board for two summers

��Ҵ�ý�ƽ�� the Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP)

The SURP is an intensive, 9-week internship designed to provide research experience and mentorship for rising-senior undergraduate students who are interested in biomedical research. Under the guidance of a faculty mentor, students will:

Complete an independent research project;
Attend weekly research seminars;
Participate in professional development workshops designed to facilitate the preparation of competitive applications for graduate/medical school; and
Present their findings at a competitive poster session.

The program will run from Monday, June 13 – Friday, August 12, 2022. An online application for the 2022 SURP is now available on the SURP website.

The application deadline is midnight Pacific Standard Time (PST) on Friday, January 7, 2022. Letters of recommendation for up to two references are due by midnight Pacific Standard Time (PST) on Friday, January 14, 2022.

While we are planning to hold an on-site experience in 2022, we are monitoring the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and assessing the safest way for students and staff to conduct the program next summer.
