Friday October 16: Peer Review 101: Responding Effectively to ReviewsÌý
Navigating peer review is essential to scientific success, but it remains part of the "hidden curriculum." This session seeks to provide trainees and early-career scholars with concrete and practical strategies for responding to manuscript reviews. Such knowledge and tools can be especially important when experience is limited, institutional resources or knowledge are scarce, or authors contend with belonging concerns. This session includes resources from Reviewer Zero (reviewerzero.net), a collective working to shift peer review culture towards more inclusive practices. We will provide an overview of the mechanics and culture of peer review, including potential sources of bias. Then, we focus on decoding editorial decisions and reviews, and we offer strategies for responses. Throughout, we welcome interactive discussion and questions. Our goal is that participants will leave with greater knowledge of the peer review system and greater efficacy to implement response strategies.

Friday October 23: So You Want to Participate in Peer Review: How to Write Inclusive and Equitable Reviews
Reviewers are central players in the publication process and can shape their reviews to provide formative feedback aimed at making the work the best it can be. When authors perceive the review process as fair and receive supportive and actionable feedback, they report a greater sense of belonging and confidence. The uncommon experience of receiving praise in reviews is similarly associated with greater inspiration and motivation to continue the work. Despite these impacts, there is often no formal reviewer training provided to early career researchers who are expected to engage in the review process. Reviewer Zero is a collective of faculty and graduate students working to shift peer review culture toward greater equity, diversity, and inclusion. This hands-on, Reviewer Zero workshop is designed to support early career researchers, who are relatively new to reviewing, in cultivating review strategies that are equitable and inclusive for authors from diverse backgrounds and research approaches.
