Nalini Nadkarni is known as “the Queen of the Forest Canopy” as a pioneer in studying biota that live in rainforest treetops. As a Biology Professor at the University of Utah, she has written over 150 scientific papers and three scholarly books, supported by the National Science Foundation. She interweaves her scientific research with innovative public engagement, engaging those who cannot otherwise access science education, including faith-based groups, artists, and corporations. Her programs also engage inmates inside state prisons with hands-on conservation projects.
Nalini’s work is featured in journals ranging from Science to Playboy, and in public media such as Science Friday, Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me, and Radiolab. In 2024, the National Geographic Society named her as an “Explorer at Large.” As a Research Fellow at the Sorenson Impact Institute, she is weaving conservation projects into the world of impact investing. Her awards include a Guggenheim Fellowship, the AAAS Award for Public Engagement, the NSF Award for Public Engagement, the Archie Carr Medal for Conservation, the Rachel Carson Award for Conservation, and the Wilson Award for the Advancement of Social Justice.
