Ted Schmitt is Senior Director of Conservation at the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence (Ai2), where he leads global partnerships for OlmoEarth, an open-source AI platform designed to turn Earth system data into action for nature. His work focuses on building shared, open infrastructure that enables governments, NGOs, Indigenous and local communities, and researchers to deploy AI responsibly in support of nature-based solutions at scale.

Ted has founded and led flagship conservation technology programs—including EarthRanger and Skylight—that are used worldwide to protect terrestrial and marine ecosystems. He has worked extensively across Africa, collaborating with field organizations to strengthen protected-area management and conservation outcomes.

Previously, Ted served at the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, shaping research agendas at the intersection of technology and public policy. He holds advanced degrees in engineering and international science policy and serves on multiple conservation advisory boards.
