The latest issue of the Assembly, an open-access, peer-reviewed, online publication edited by School of Education doctoral students, is called "Educators Moving Towards Collective Liberation." It features a multimodal collection of reflections by educator-scholars who attended the Educator Institute for Equity and Justice hosted by A Queer Endeavor last summer.

2021 was another challenging year, but we have a lot to be grateful for as move ahead to 2022 and spring semester. Here are five of our top highlights from the ���Ҵ�ý�ƽ������ School of Education’s past year, as we look forward to positivity and new possibilities in the coming year.

COVID-19 will be top of mind for Laura-Elena Porras-Holguin when she graduates. The virus deeply impacted her family but also motivated her to finish her senior thesis and solidified her desire to pursue a master’s degree in public health. Porras-Holguin is a magna cum laude ���Ҵ�ý�ƽ������ graduate, who was also a Multicultural Leadership Scholar and research assistant for the Research Hub for Youth Organizing, both housed in the School of Education.

In the latest issue of the ���Ҵ�ý�ƽ������ School of Education's magazine, Voices, we invite you to dream with us—from Diana Bustamante- Aguilar’s classroom that foregrounds her students’ dreams to Stephanie Toliver’s work centering Black girls as heroes in literature and much more. The American Educational Research Association (AERA) has selected University of Colorado Boulder Associate Professor Elizabeth J. Meyer for the AERA Award for Distinguished Contributions to Gender Equity in Education Research, which recognizes individuals within AERA for distinguished research, professional practice, and activities that advance public understanding of gender and/or sexuality at any level in the education community.

On Thursday, Dec. 2, the School of Education at ���Ҵ�ý�ƽ������ will host a special virtual gathering of Ed Talks, an intersectional exploration of place, identity, family, the body, romance and more. Inspired by TED Talks, ���Ҵ�ý�ƽ������ Ed Talks are short, engaging talks that address some of today’s most pressing issues in education and beyond, including various ways of working toward collective liberation. 

Professor Valerie K. Otero has been designated the distinct honor as a 2021 American Physical Society (APS) fellow. The APS cited Otero's “creation and broad dissemination of innovative physics curricular materials, pioneering contributions to physics teacher education and professional development, and for the development, implementation and wide dissemination of the Learning Assistant Model across diverse institutions.”

Teachers, students, families, librarians and all who love children’s books are invited to the 2021 virtual Children’s Book Festival on Friday, Nov. 12. Co-hosted by the ���Ҵ�ý�ƽ������ School of Education and the city’s largest independent bookshop, the Boulder Book Store, the festival will feature 10 award-winning authors. The festival aims to build interest in acclaimed authors and books, particularly authors of color and books that represent diverse cultures. 

A new study led by ���Ҵ�ý�ƽ������'s Mimi Engel has taken one of the most in-depth looks yet at a typical day-in-the-life of a kindergarten student. The team’s results suggest that kids attending schools serving low-income communities in a large urban area seem to spend their class time differently than students from wealthier backgrounds.

Colorado Springs teacher Kristen Sim first enrolled a ���Ҵ�ý�ƽ������ graduate certificate in Teacher Leadership last fall thinking she might get a master’s degree over time. Fast forward one year, one pandemic, six self-paced online courses, three capstones, and a network of new colleagues, and Sim is now the first graduate of the Teacher Leadership program.
