Sorority and Fraternity Recruitment Attendance Guidance for Faculty and Staff
The College Panhellenic Council and the CU Interfraternity Council (the university-affiliated fraternity community) are beginning their annual recruitment cycles. College Panhellenic recruitment will take place over the Labor Day weekend, while Interfraternity Council recruitment events will occur throughout September.Ìý
This year, we anticipate that more than 3,000 potential new members will participate in the recruitment process. In addition, over 5,000 current fraternity and sorority members will be actively involved in recruiting for their respective chapters. Given the significant number of undergraduate students participating in these activities, we would like to provide faculty and staff with information regarding students’ involvement and the measures in place to support their academic success during this period.Ìý
Fraternity & Sorority Life (FSL) and all governing councils want to emphasize that we do not condone or encourage any potential or current member to miss class or other academic commitments to participate in recruitment activities. We firmly believe that students’ academic responsibilities must remain their highest priority.Ìý
To support this commitment:Ìý
- Recruitment schedules can be adjusted for potential new members to allow participation in the process without interfering with academic obligations.Ìý
- Chapters are expected to provide similar accommodation for current members involved in recruitment activities. No member should face fines, sanctions, or other penalties for prioritizing academic commitments over recruitment events.Ìý
Throughout the recruitment period, FSL and chapter leaders will consistently communicate to both potential and current members that academics come first. While participants are informed that they should not miss classes, exams, or other academic responsibilities for recruitment activities, individual students ultimately make their own decisions regarding participation.Ìý
If you encounter a situation in which a student indicates that they are being required or pressured to miss class or another academic commitment because of recruitment, please notify our office. Providing the student’s name and, if applicable, whether they are a potential new member or a current chapter member will allow us to follow up appropriately. You are also welcome to reference this communication when reinforcing expectations regarding academic priorities.Ìý
We strongly support the university’s academic mission and believe that student success in the classroom must remain paramount. At the same time, we recognize the value of meaningful involvement outside the classroom and the lifelong connections students can build through fraternity and sorority membership. Those opportunities, however, should never come at the expense of academic achievement.Ìý
Thank you for your partnership in supporting the success and well-being of our students.Ìý
