On October 2nd, Oxford Ionics joined nearly 100 graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, and faculty from JILA, CU, and NIST to highlight some of their recent advancements in quantum computing in the third installment of the JILA Association of Graduate Students (JAGS) Industry Spotlight seminars. This seminar, given by Dr. David Allcock, highlighted the pivotal role that Boulder has played in forging the path towards large, fast, and robust quantum computing systems.
MLB Marlins coach and former JILAn, Dr. Aaron Leanhardt, gave the first Life After JILA talk of the fall semester, with a record-breaking turnout for the seminar series. Over 60 JILAns, including PIs, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and undergraduate students, attended Dr. Leanhardt鈥檚 talk about his journey from academia to professional baseball.
On April 16th,听over 100 graduate students, undergraduate students, postdoctoral researchers, staff, research scientists, and PIs attended the first JILA Association of Graduate Students (JAGS) Industry Spotlight.
Carl Sauer, a distinguished electrical engineer, passed away on February 2nd, 2025. He is survived by his wife and two sons, Carl and Evan. Sauer's passion for electrical engineering led him to a remarkable career marked by innovation and dedication.
JILA and the University of Colorado Boulder Physics Department are excited to co-host the upcoming CU*IP conference in January 2025. This three-day event focuses on talks, workshops, and community building for undergraduate women and gender minorities in physics. As part of the American Physical Society's Conferences for Undergraduate Women and Gender Minorities in Physics (CU*IP), the conference aims to support and inspire students to continue in the field.
The second installment of the JILA JAGS (JILA Association of Graduate Students) Seminar series recently took place, featuring an exciting lineup of talks by graduate students pushing the boundaries of scientific research.
The event highlighted the work of Bejan Ghomashi from the Becker Group, Trevor Kieft from the Lewandowski Group, and Emma Nelson from the Kapteyn/Murnane Group, who each presented their cutting-edge research to an engaged audience.
The JILA Association of Graduate Students (JAGS) proudly hosted its inaugural Graduate Student Seminar, marking the beginning of a promising seminar series to foster academic exchange, collaboration, and community within JILA. The event showcased the cutting-edge research conducted by three JILA graduate students, drawing an audience of over 70 graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and staff members.
JILA and the University of Colorado Boulder's Department of Physics proudly announce two 2024 Physics Department Teaching Award recipients: JILA Fellow and NIST Fellow and Professor Eric Cornell and JILA Fellow and听 Professor John Bohn. These awards recognize their exceptional dedication to teaching and their profound impact on students at different levels of their academic journey.
Since its inception in 1962, JILA has been a vital part of the University of Colorado鈥檚 physics research department, leading the way in the science of precision measurement while also teaching the next generation of physicists. Congressman Neguse recently released an update on funds for JILA provided by the Community Project Funding (PCF) status, saying: 鈥淐olorado has become world-renowned for its research ecosystem, and I could not be more excited that we鈥檝e secured funding to help support the development of these groundbreaking labs in Colorado鈥檚 Second District. Thanks to this funding, JILA researchers and scientists will be able to complete much needed renovations to their lab鈥攅quipping this facility with the tools needed to remain a leader in their field.鈥
Some of the most important research and discoveries in science have been made by women. To celebrate these inspiring individuals and to support the next generation of female scientists, the United Nations dedicated February 11 as "International Women and Girls in Science" day. To honor this tradition, JILA hosted a panel discussion/open-forum with both JILA Fellows and JILA staff as speakers.
