Science Discovery - BSD: A Growing Threat to Curacao Surgeonfish

ellen poster

Last Friday, the Johnson Lab's Science Discovery student Ellen Goodman presented at the program's poster session. CU's Science Discovery program gives local high school students an opportunity to get involved in research under the guidance of a professional mentor. Ellen has spent the summer in the lab researching Bacterial Skin Disease (BSD), which is impacting surgeonfish populations in Curacao. By watching videos recorded by student divers in 2024 and 2025, she was able to quantify prevalence at three different sites. Prevalence increased at two of the sites, but decreased at the third, potentially due to shifting wind patterns.

Thank you Ellen for all of your hard work!
