Meet Carew Boulding

Associate Professor in Political Science
carew boulding

鈥淚 always liked the idea of being a professor,鈥 Dr. Carew Boulding reflected from her serene, second-story office. Packed wall to wall with books, the office is a reminder of the ten years Boulding has spent doing what she loves at 蜜桃传媒破解版下载, the only university she鈥檚 ever worked at.

鈥淚 applied for about forty jobs at universities all over the world,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 felt incredibly lucky to get the job at CU. I love Boulder鈥攖here aren鈥檛 many better places to live.鈥

To be sure, Boulding has many ties to the scenic college town. She spent her childhood in Boulder, and her husband is a CU graduate. What鈥檚 more: her grandparents, Kenneth and Elise Boulding, both taught at CU in the economics and sociology departments, respectively.

鈥淢y grandparents were kind of public figures in Boulder,鈥 Boulding said. 鈥淭hrough the 鈥60s, 鈥70s, and 鈥80s, they were really involved in organizing peace movements.鈥

She鈥檚 reminded of their contributions whenever she happens upon newspaper articles about their achievements or academic papers published by her grandparents.

鈥淭hey鈥檙e definitely inspirational people to me,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 was really close to both of them.鈥

Though many factors played a role in Boulding鈥檚 decision to become a professor, she is 鈥渟ure it was influenced by seeing the work that they had done.鈥

Now a tenured professor herself, she puts maximum effort into all aspects of her work and enjoys when she can bring her research and her teaching together.

鈥淯ndergraduates often don鈥檛 get the opportunity to understand the research their faculty are doing,鈥 she said, 鈥渟o in my teaching I try to engage students with my research.鈥

Boulding鈥檚 latest project draws from surveys and data to find out听how poverty affects political participation in Latin American countries. Her efforts will culminate in a book that has been five years in the making and will, hopefully, be ready for publishers in the summer of 2017.

In the meantime, she plans to keep up with both a diversified list of hobbies鈥攔eading, hiking, cross-country skiing鈥攁nd her energetic family.

鈥淚 have three daughters who are 4, 8, and 11,鈥 she said, 鈥渟o they keep me pretty busy. They鈥檙e a lot of fun.鈥

As for her research, she has yet to decide on the next subject she鈥檒l study. She鈥檚 hardly at a loss for possibilities, however鈥攍ike a true professor, she鈥檚 already 鈥渢hinking of ideas for the next big project.鈥
