Political science is a social science discipline focused on the study of political institutions, behavior, ideas, and the analytical methods used to examine them. The department’s work is structured around six key fields: American politics, comparative politics, international relations, public policy, political theory, and empirical theory and methodology. Its mission is to deepen understanding of the political world while equipping students with the tools for lifelong inquiry, critical engagement, and analysis.

The undergraduate program emphasizes critical thinking, analytical writing, research methods, and effective communication of social science insights. Graduates pursue careers in government, business, non-governmental organizations, and a range of other sectors. The major also provides strong preparation for advanced study in political science, law, public policy, and related fields.

Students explore essential political concepts, including:

  • The philosophical foundations of justice, equality, and representation
  • The significance of diversity and its political impact
  • The structure and function of the American political system
  • The behavior of political actors and its broader implications
  • The political and social systems of other nations
  • The dynamics of international cooperation and conflict
