Getting around Boulder has changed a lot over the past 150 years. From early rail lines to today’s buses, bike paths and campus shuttles, transportation has shaped how students, staff and residents connect with the city and ���Ҵ�ý�ƽ������. Here’s a quick look at how Boulder’s transportation story has evolved.

• 1870: Boulder gains a rail connection to Denver, helping the city grow and making regional travel possible.
• Early 1900s: Electric streetcars run along Pearl Street, and interurban trains connect Boulder and Denver.
• 1968-70: CU professor Al Bartlett, with the help��of his daughter's Girl Scout troop and CU��student assistant Ted Wells, mapped out safe bike routes in Boulder and submitted a document to the city in 1968 entitled “Bikeways for Boulder.” Two years later, they “cut” the ribbon on the first official bike path in Boulder.
• 1989: Boulder adopts its first Transportation Master Plan, focusing on long‑term travel options beyond driving alone.
• 1990s: Bike paths expand and the EcoPass program launches, making transit easier to use for students and employees.
• 2011: Electric vehicle charging comes to CU, with the first station installed at the Wolf Law building
• 2000s to 2010s: High‑frequency bus routes like the HOP and SKIP grow, connecting ���Ҵ�ý�ƽ������ to pretty much everywhere you need to go. Boulder BCycle launched in May 2011.
• 2020s: ���Ҵ�ý�ƽ������ and the City continue investing in programs like Buff Bus service, BCycle, campus bike infrastructure, and electric buses—prioritizing safety, sustainability, and choice. Lime e‑scooters officially launched in Boulder on August 18, 2021 as part of the City of Boulder’s Shared Micromobility Program.

Transit includes buses operated by RTD, shuttles to parks and mountains and shared vehicles such as Ride Free Lafayette and paratransit.
