The Buffs’ lineup stayed aggressive while still showing patience, forcing Mines pitchers to work deep into counts.

Cole Wayne was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a walk, setting the tone from the top of the order. Judson Stafford added a big night as well, finishing 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI.

Colorado spread the production throughout the lineup. Elon Schwartz went 2-for-3, scored two runs and reached base multiple times, while Richie Biborosch III chipped in a hit and scored a run. The Buffs also took advantage of opportunities without hits—driving in runs via walks and productive outs to keep the scoreboard moving.

Pitching holds Mines in check

On the mound, Colorado leaned on a strong two-man effort to shut the door on Mines. Chase Ambuehl earned the win, tossing 4.0 innings while allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits, striking out six and walking just one. He consistently worked ahead in counts and limited hard contact.

Wesley Freed came on in relief and closed things out, throwing 2.0 innings, allowing one run on one hit and striking out three. The Buffs’ pitching staff combined for nine strikeouts while allowing just four hits on the night, keeping Mines from mounting any sustained rallies.

Complete team win

Defensively, Colorado played clean baseball, backing up its pitchers with solid fielding and smart decision-making. When Mines did manage to get runners on, the Buffs responded with timely strikeouts and routine outs to escape trouble.

The combination of patient offense and efficient pitching allowed Colorado to play from ahead all night—a formula that paid off as the Buffs closed out a convincing rivalry win.

Looking ahead

The 7–3 victory over Mines highlights what Colorado is capable of when all phases click. With contributions throughout the lineup and strong performances on the mound, the Buffs showed depth, discipline and composure—traits that will be crucial as the season continues.

Related Articles

Traditional

0

On

White
Fri, 27 Mar 2026 16:54:14 +0000 Emily Sampl 123 at /sportclubs Buffs figure skating wins DU Open, qualifies for nationals /sportclubs/2026/03/27/buffs-figure-skating-wins-du-open-qualifies-nationals Buffs figure skating wins DU Open, qualifies for nationals Emily Sampl Fri, 03/27/2026 - 10:44

Tags:

news

Inside Magness Arena this past weekend, the Ҵýƽ figure skating team didn’t just make a statement—they made history.

Competing in the final Pacific Coast regional qualifier of the season, the Buffs delivered their strongest performance ever, winning the DU Open with a program-record 241 points and clinching first place overall. For a team that had never finished higher than third at a regional before this season, the moment felt surreal.

But it was very real—and very earned

A turnaround three weeks in the making

The victory capped an incredibly tight turnaround. Just three weeks earlier, CU competed in California at the Stanford/Berkeley regional, where they finished fifth and saw their path to nationals get significantly tougher.

With less than a month to recover, refine programs and mentally reset, the team leaned on what has carried them all year: camaraderie, depth and the kind of steady progression that comes from trusting the process.

This time, skating on familiar Colorado ice—with no flights, no hotels and the comfort of home altitude—the Buffs hit their peak when it mattered most.

Their 241-point performance didn’t just win the meet; it vaulted them to fourth in the Pacific Coast Conference across all three qualifiers, officially qualifying CU for Nationals in Salt Lake City for only the second time in program history. Out of over 120 collegiate teams nationwide, CU now sits in the top 16.

Medal after medal: CU skaters shine across the board

CU’s strength has always been its depth, and that was on full display as athletes racked up podium finishes in nearly every discipline.

Highlights included:

Juliette Hauben – Bronze, Junior Champ Free Skate

Matthew Rounis – Bronze, Men’s Junior Short

Abigail Singer – Gold, Preliminary Women’s Free Skate

Elise Juethner – Gold, Novice Solo Free Dance; Silver, Silver Pattern Dance

Benjamin Kohav – Gold, Pre-Preliminary Men’s Free Skate

Wilson Sperry – Gold, Preliminary Pattern Dance

Sarah Bluberg – Gold, Juvenile Solo Free Dance; Bronze, Intermediate Women’s Free Skate

Emily Martin – Silver, Bronze Pattern Dance; Silver, Intermediate Women’s Free Skate

Abby Anderson – Silver, Pre-Silver Pattern Dance; Gold, Bronze Pattern Dance

Ava Rocker – Silver, Juvenile Women’s Short; Bronze, Juvenile Free Skate

Leila Gridley – Bronze, Pre-Juvenile Women’s Free Skate

Susannah Day – Silver, Aspire 3 Free Skate

From solo dance to free skate events, CU left their mark everywhere.

The moment that will stick forever

When the final standings were announced—Ҵýƽ 241, Stanford 238, Berkeley 234, Denver 223—the team fell into what can only be described as pure celebration.

This wasn’t supposed to be the outcome. Not yet. Not this dramatically.

But that’s the thing about sports: sometimes the story you don’t expect becomes the story you remember forever.

And for CU figure skating, this weekend became one of those stories.

Next stop: Salt Lake City

With momentum, history and a whole lot of confidence behind them, the Buffs now shift their focus to Nationals. If the DU Open was any indication, this is a team hitting its stride at exactly the right time.

And somewhere in Magness Arena, after the cheers quieted and medals were packed away, the reality started to sink in:

The CU figure skating team isn’t done rewriting its history. For a program still riding the momentum of last year’s title run, the 2025–26 campaign marked a clear statement: Colorado is no longer just moving up—they’re competing.

Learning curve comes early

The transition to Division II was immediate and unforgiving. Early-season matchups exposed the speed, depth and physicality that define the higher division, especially against Division I and nationally established programs. Colorado took its lumps in November, facing tough opponents and learning quickly what it would take to win consistently at the next level.

But even during the growing pains, flashes of the Buffs’ identity showed through—fast-paced offensive play, confidence with the puck and a willingness to go toe-to-toe with anyone on the rink.

Finding their footing

As the season progressed, Colorado began to settle in. Close wins and overtime battles highlighted the team’s growing composure, particularly in tight games where execution mattered most. The Buffs showed an ability to respond after setbacks, stringing together strong performances that kept them firmly in the Division II conversation.

One of the defining traits of this year’s team was balance. Colorado didn’t rely on one line or one moment—contributions came from across the roster, with players stepping into bigger roles as the season unfolded. That depth proved crucial as the schedule intensified and legs got heavier.

Statement wins and rivalry moments

The Buffs also made their presence known in regional play, picking up key wins that strengthened their postseason résumé. Rivalry games carried extra weight, and Colorado consistently rose to the occasion, showing both emotional control and competitive edge when it mattered most.

Those moments—grinding out close games, responding after losses and finishing strong late—became the foundation of their Division II push.

Punching the ticket to nationals

By season’s end, Colorado had done enough to earn a spot at the Division II National Championships—a significant milestone for a team that was lifting a Division III trophy just one year ago. The qualification wasn’t about perfection; it was about growth, resilience and proving they could compete in a deeper, faster division.

For a roster still blending championship experience with new responsibilities, the national berth served as validation of the work put in all season—on the rink, in practice and through adversity.

Bigger picture

The 2025–26 season will be remembered as a transition year—but not a rebuilding one. Colorado didn’t step into Division II quietly. Instead, the Buffs used the season to set a standard for where the program is headed.

With postseason experience now extending to the D2 national stage, Colorado roller hockey has positioned itself as a program on the rise—one that’s learning quickly, competing fearlessly and building toward sustained success at the next level.

And after this season, one thing is clear: the Buffs aren’t done climbing.

Related Articles

Traditional

0

On

White
Fri, 27 Mar 2026 16:33:51 +0000 Emily Sampl 121 at /sportclubs Women's lacrosse takes down rival Colorado State /sportclubs/2026/03/27/womens-lacrosse-takes-down-rival-colorado-state Women's lacrosse takes down rival Colorado State Emily Sampl Fri, 03/27/2026 - 10:25

Tags:

news

The University of Colorado women’s lacrosse team defended Kittredge Field on Saturday afternoon, pulling away late to earn a 12–7 win over in-state rival Colorado State in regular season action.

While the game stayed tight early, Colorado’s depth and offensive balance proved to be the difference, especially in the second half as the Buffs steadily built separation and closed out the rivalry matchup.

Second-half surge seals it

After a back-and-forth opening stretch, Colorado found its rhythm offensively and began to string together quality possessions. The Buffs capitalized on CSU defensive breakdowns and made the most of their scoring chances, finishing with 12 goals from multiple contributors.

Sydney Schutzman and Livia Klanian led the charge, each recording four goals to pace the Colorado attack. Their ability to create space and finish consistently helped Colorado maintain control when momentum was up for grabs. Bella Lane added a goal and an assist, while Brooke Miller, Ana Jimenez and Hattie Sloane also found the back of the net, showcasing the Buffs’ balanced scoring effort.

Colorado State made a push late, scoring seven times and forcing Colorado to stay locked in defensively. Despite the surge, the Buffs responded with timely stops and smart possession play to keep CSU from getting any closer down the stretch.

Balanced effort across the field

Beyond the scoring column, Colorado benefited from contributions all over the roster. The Buffs won key ground balls, moved the ball efficiently on offense and stayed disciplined defensively to limit CSU’s chances early in the game.

The rivalry atmosphere added extra energy to the matchup, but Colorado remained composed throughout, executing in crucial moments and preventing Colorado State from fully swinging momentum.

Looking ahead

The win adds another solid result to Colorado’s regular season résumé and keeps the Buffs moving in the right direction as conference play continues. Florida jumped out early, scoring five goals in the first quarter and building an 8–3 halftime lead that put the Buffs on their heels.

Rather than folding, Colorado responded with its best stretch of the week in the third quarter. The Buffs exploded for six unanswered goals, completely flipping the game and briefly taking control behind strong midfield play and dominant faceoff performances. The run energized the sideline and brought the crowd back into it.

Despite the surge, Florida stayed composed down the stretch and capitalized late to steal the win. The offense spread the ball well, finding quality looks instead of forcing shots, while the defense tightened up and limited Chapman’s transition chances.

Colorado continued to apply pressure in the second half, winning the ground ball battle and controlling possession. The balanced scoring effort and steady play in goal allowed the Buffs to close out the game comfortably and regain momentum heading into Sunday.

San Diego State grinds out road win

The weekend finale brought another tough matchup, as Colorado hosted No. 17 San Diego State in a physical, defensive-minded contest. The Buffs struggled to find rhythm early, managing just one goal in the first quarter as SDSU built a lead.

Colorado showed life in the second half, cutting into the deficit with a strong third quarter push and making it a one-possession game late. Defensive stops and hustle plays kept the Buffs within striking distance, but San Diego State answered when it mattered most.

Despite outworking SDSU in stretches and fighting until the final whistle, Colorado couldn’t fully close the gap, dropping the game 9–7. The loss capped off a weekend where effort wasn’t lacking—but execution in key moments made the difference.

Looking ahead

The Buffs finish the stretch with a 1–2 record, but the weekend showed flashes of what this group is capable of when things click. The Buffs entered the tournament as League Champions and Regional Co-Champions, momentum they carried all the way to a semifinal appearance.

Dominant Start Sets the Tone

CU opened group play with authority, winning its group and delivering one of the tournament’s most eye-catching results — a 1–1 draw against defending national champion BYU, showcasing the Buffs’ ability to compete with the best teams in the country. The group-stage performance secured CU’s advance into knockout play, where the team continued its remarkable postseason run.

A Thrilling Quarterfinal Classic

The highlight of the tournament came in the quarterfinals, where CU battled Georgia Tech in what players described as one of the most intense matches of the season.
