Calling all faculty, staff, recognized student organizations and social Greek organizations: Have a great idea for leveraging the arrival of the Sundance Film Festival to campus in your classes or other academic or campus community areas?

��Ҵ�ý�ƽ�� is collaborating with the Sundance Institute to launch a year of academic, creative and experiential programming that extends beyond the Festival itself, and we want to hear your ideas.

These engagement opportunities may include things like: classroom visits; research and creative work events; recognized student organization or recognized social Greek organization programming; campus symposiums or panels; and visioning and planning meetings for deeper engagements, such as collaborative research, exhibits, capstones and events.

Proposals are not limited to specific disciplines or subjects, but they must show a clear connection with an aspect of the Sundance Institute and its mission and/or operations.

Each event or activity will typically require that a Sundance Institute staff member or members attend one or two, and no more than four, gatherings, discussions and events.

Any funding needed for a proposed academic or co-curricular event or activity must come from the submitter’s unit, such as the department or program, school or college, institute or center, or recognized student organization.

Who reviews your submission

A committee led by Public and Community Engaged Scholarship (PACES) and made up of faculty, staff and students will review all submissions and recommend proposals.

Ann Schmiesing, senior vice chancellor for strategic initiatives and professor of German, will serve as the committee’s executive sponsor; project management will be handled by Kim Kruchen, director of business strategy.

The committee will confirm the Sundance Institute is able to support the recommended proposals, then connect Institute staff with proposal submitters and track engagement events and activities.

A few reminders

Please do not reach out directly to the Sundance Institute to request participation in academic and co-curricular events. If the Institute is able to support your idea, a member of the review committee will connect you to them.

Keep in mind the Sundance Institute may have limited capacity for fall activities as the Festival relocates to Boulder. Information about Maymester and Summer Session will be forthcoming in the spring semester.

Study on stress, coping

Are you a first-year student at ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ��? Interested in a research study on stress and coping in CU students?

The Research on Affective Disorders and Development Lab is conducting research on stress coping in first year CU students. We want to understand what helps CU students cope with stress during major transitions, including the transition to college and across semesters.

The study includes a few different parts that happen over the three-semester study period:

There are two in-person research sessions, each of which takes about four to six hours. During these sessions, you will play some computer games while we monitor physical functioning (for example, your heart rate). You will also complete a set of interviews and surveys that ask about stress, behavior, mood and health.
There are three 21-day periods in which we will send you a daily “micro survey” (less than five minutes to answer) asking about your behavior and mood using an app.
There are two one-hour online surveys that we will send to your email.

The study takes place over the course of three semesters, and you will be compensated for your participation (maximum of $446–$470 for completing all parts of the study). If you want to learn more, contact the RADD Lab at raddlab@colorado.edu or fill out the initial eligibility screening.

Studies for adults

Study on chronic pain and reading

Researchers at ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ�� are conducting an in-person research study examining how adults with chronic pain read and understand informational texts.

If you choose to participate, you will complete a reading and comprehension task while your eye movements are recorded using an eye-tracking system on a computer screen. You will also complete questionnaires about your background, health and everyday experiences.

The study involves one in-person visit at ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ�� and will take approximately 90 minutes. Participants who complete all study procedures will receive $30 per hour in compensation.

Eye tracking is a non-invasive method that uses a camera-based system to measure where you look on a computer screen while completing the reading task.

Participation is voluntary. You may stop participating at any time.

To be eligible, you must be at least 18 years old, be able to come to ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ�� for an in-person study visit and have chronic pain. Eligibility:

Study on menopause, vascular health, fat gain

The LILAC Study is investigating how menopause affects vascular health and fat gain—factors that may contribute to the increased risk of heart disease in women. This important work could help improve prevention and treatment strategies for women’s health.

Who can participate? Researchers are seeking:

Females ages 20–55
Non-smokers
Individuals not currently using hormonal contraceptives (non-hormonal IUDs are OK)

Compensation of up to $800 is provided.

The hot tub study

The Integrative Physiology of Aging Lab at ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ�� is seeking volunteers to participate in a clinical research study. They are looking for adults, ages 40-plus, who are willing to participate in water-immersion sessions approximately three times per week for 12 weeks and have above-normal blood pressure (a top number of 115 or higher; if you are unsure of your blood pressure, please still contact the lab for screening).

Benefits for volunteers include: cardiovascular health assessment, exercise stress test, body composition, blood chemistries and monetary compensation for time.

Want to see what your brain looks like?

The Intermountain Neuorimaging Consortium (INC) is a brain imaging research facility in the Institute of Cognitive Science at ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ��. They use MRI scans to study how the brain works and how the brain changes across the lifespan. They currently have six to seven studies that are looking for participants from a range of ages across the Denver metro area.

Study on your favorite music

Do you love listening to music? Are you curious about how your favorite music affects your brain? The Brain Music Lab at ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ�� is currently recruiting participants for a research study, Neural Mechanisms of Music Appreciation (��Ҵ�ý�ƽ�� IRB #25-0777), investigating favorite music listening and brain activity in young adults.

The total expected time commitment is approximately 4.5 hours. Research activities will take place over several weeks, according to your availability and the researchers’ availability. Participating in this study involves:

Completing an online survey (30 minutes)
One in-person visit to the Brain Music Lab (Roser ATLAS building) on ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ�� Main Campus (90 minutes)
A practice MRI session (30 minutes), online survey (30 minutes) and an MRI scan (90 minutes) at the Center for Innovation & Creativity (CINC), located just east of ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ�� Main Campus

Even if you enroll in this study, you may not qualify for all of these research activities. Individuals who complete parts one and two will be compensated with a $20 Amazon gift certificate. Individuals who also complete part three will be compensated with an additional $20 Amazon gift certificate, plus an image of their brain.

Eligibility:

18–25 years old
Be native English speakers
Have little-to-no musical training
Be able to undergo MRI (see specific MRI requirements; not pregnant)
Be right-handed
Have normal, or corrected-to-normal, hearing and vision
Have no music processing-related disorders
Have no recent psychiatric diagnoses, and not recently taken psychiatric medications (within six months)
Be able to attend in-person sessions at the ATLAS Institute on ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ�� Main Campus, as well as at the Center for Innovation and Creativity (CINC)

Study on bipolar disorder in young adults

Paid Young Emerging Adult Research Study (YEARS) study at ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ�� and CU Anschutz (IRB# 232067) to understand emotions.

Earn $25 per hour (up to approximately $400 total) for up to three study session phases (1.75 hours). Must be 18–25 years, be able to attend in-person sessions, and have a personal history of bipolar disorder.

Study on chronic cannabis use

With the increasing popularity of high-potency THC products, it is important that we both understand the implications of chronic use and how to help those who want to reduce their cannabis use.

The aim of this study is to investigate whether CBD could be a viable intervention for people who want to quit or significantly reduce their consumption of high-potency THC concentrates. Longitudinal Outpatient Treatment for Cannabis Use (LOTUS) through the CUChange lab will examine any differences in efficacy between broad-spectrum CBD and full-spectrum CBD in reducing withdrawal symptoms when compared to a placebo. LOTUS study participation takes place over four months. However, your total time commitment will be 13 hours. Participants have seven in-person appointments and five therapy sessions focused on cannabis reduction.

In order to be eligible, participants must be at least 21 years old. Eligible participants can complete the screening.

Participants will be compensated and the end of every in-person appointment and can receive up to $390 dollars for their time and efforts.

Sleep studies

At-home sleep study

The purpose of this study is to examine circadian rhythms in the home environment under three different lighting conditions: typical home lighting, candlelight and outdoor sunlight in the morning. The findings will provide important insights into how circadian rhythms can be measured outside of the laboratory and how morning light exposure influences circadian hormones.

��Ҵ�ý�ƽ�� researchers are looking for men and women, ages 18–65, to participate in an at-home monitoring research study that lasts approximately one week, with a total of two short visits at the Sleep and Chronobiology Laboratory. Compensation is up to $180.

Study on delayed sleep-wake phase disorder

Do you have trouble falling asleep before 1 a.m.? Do you find it difficult to wake up early in the morning for your commitments? Does your high schooler have a hard time falling asleep before 1 a.m. and waking up early in the morning/for high school?

The Sleep and Chronobiology Laboratory is looking for people with delayed sleep-wake phase disorder or people with late bedtimes—or healthy people with typical bedtimes.

Eligibility:

Researchers are looking for males and females, ages 16–40, to participate in a 6.5-weeklong study with six in-person visits. You may be eligible for this study if you:

Have a diagnosis of delayed-sleep wake phase disorder or have late bedtimes after 1 a.m., an inability to fall asleep and difficulty awakening when required for school/work
Or are healthy with typical bedtimes and no sleep concerns

What to expect:

Health screening
Monitor on separate occasions your sleep, mood, eating times for one or two weeks and blood sugar levels while living at home
Live in the sleep laboratory on two separate occasions for 51–66 hours (approximately 4.87 days in total)
Blood and saliva sampling
A few blood samples and more frequent saliva sampling
Testing on reaction time, mood and ability to think

With the Sundance Film Festival coming to campus Jan. 21–31, there are several opportunities for ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ�� students to get involved now.

Apply for paid internships

Two paid internships focused on accessibility at the festival are actively accepting applications exclusively for enrolled Buffs. Both positions are posted on Handshake and are hybrid, temporary, part-time and pay $19.29 per hour:

The accessibility intern will provide administrative support to the Sundance Film Festival accessibility team; gain insight into common barriers, accommodations and resources that impact an accessible event; develop and proofread training materials that support various learning styles; and gain an understanding of neurodiversity and how to create accessible materials.
The American Sign Language (ASL) intern will help the Sundance Institute establish a network of ASL interpreters, cultivate working relationships with ASL vendors, build a working knowledge around platform interpreting and accessibility for large-scale events, gain insight into best practices around representation in the process of Festival slotting, and pair interpreter background, skills and experience to specific needs of an event or end user.

Press credentials

Are you an aspiring journalist or film influencer interested in covering the largest independent film showcase in the United States? The Sundance Film Festival has reserved a set number of press credentials for qualifying ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ�� students:

There are two windows to apply for press accreditation. With limited press credentials, you are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. The standard application window is open now and runs through Oct. 22. The late application window runs from Oct. 22 through Dec. 10.
You must include an assignment letter from a professor, editor or employer verifying that you are covering the Festival as part of a class assignment, a news assignment or other assignment.

Volunteer corps

Want a different way to get involved? The Sundance Institute is taking applications for its many volunteer opportunities, including a new student volunteer program. If interested, you are encouraged to apply to volunteer as soon as possible.

Volunteering for the Sundance Film Festival is a one-of-a-kind experience. Every year, volunteers help create a global platform to celebrate film by collaborating with one another and supporting the mission of the Sundance Institute. The real benefit of volunteering is being part of a passionate community dedicated to supporting independent storytelling and providing positive experiences for all.

If you apply and are selected, you will be notified on a rolling basis. If you are not selected, you will be notified via email starting in December. Training and scheduling of volunteers happen in December and January.

You are encouraged to attend a volunteer information session before completing an application. The last Zoom session is Wednesday, Sept. 16, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

As ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ�� celebrates its 150th anniversary, the campus community is invited to help shape one of the year's signature events: Shine on Norlin, taking place Thursday, Oct. 1, from 4 to 8 p.m. on Norlin Quad.

The celebration will feature food, live performances, interactive activities and the premiere of a spectacular visual storytelling experience projected onto the west face of Norlin Library. Through light, imagery and animation, the show will bring ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ��'s people, discoveries, achievements and aspirations to life. Following the debut, projections will continue nightly at dusk throughout October, from approximately 6 to 9 p.m.

Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to help tell ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ��'s story and showcase the creativity, innovation and impact that define our campus. There are several ways to get involved:

Share a story or image for possible inclusion in the Norlin projection. Historic photos, research breakthroughs, milestone achievements, alumni success stories and creative ideas are welcome.
Host a table on Norlin Quad to highlight your college, school, department, program, research, history or accomplishments.
Participate in the evening program through a brief performance, presentation or demonstration that showcases the talent, scholarship and creativity of the ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ�� community.

As ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ�� celebrates its 150th anniversary, the university is reflecting not only on the people who have shaped its history but also on the landscapes, wildlife and natural environments that have long been part of the campus experience. The university’s sesquicentennial celebration invites the community to explore the many stories that make up ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ�� past, present and future.

This fall, three interconnected events offer students, faculty, staff and community members an opportunity to experience that perspective firsthand. Supported in part by the 150th Initiative Fund, the Earth Sciences and Map Library and NEST Studio for the Arts, the “Campus Life: 150 Years of Human and More-Than-Human Relationships at ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ��” exhibition, the BioBlitz! iNaturalist Workshop and Creature Crawl each highlight the unique connections between people and nature that have developed on campus over the past century and a half.

Together, the programs encourage participants to see campus through a different lens, one that recognizes ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ�� as a shared habitat where learning, discovery and community extend beyond human experiences alone.

Looking at 150 years of shared history

At the center of the trio of events is “Campus Life: 150 Years of Human and More-Than-Human Relationships at ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ��,” an exhibition on display at the Jerry Crail Johnson Earth Sciences and Map Library through December 2026.

The exhibit explores the shared history of humans and the many plants, animals and other living organisms that have occupied the university’s grounds since its founding in 1876. Through historical maps, animal and plant specimens, photographs, original watercolors and modern cartography, visitors can trace how the campus has evolved and how interactions between people and wildlife have changed over time.

The exhibition highlights, for example, the prairie dog student protests in the 1970s; preserved animals and plants from the region, part of the CU Museum of Natural History’s education collection; and the tree planting events that have been happening on campus since its inception.

Rather than viewing nature as simply a backdrop to campus life, the exhibition positions it as an active participant in ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ�� story. This active participation during the sesquicentennial began with the planting of a ginkgo tree that will outlive most of us during the next 150 years of ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ�� history.

The tree, which was planted next to Benson Earth Sciences in partnership with Facilities Management, is a gift to the Earth Science Department. This species was suggested by Chair Anne Sheehan because ginkgos are “living fossils.” A couple of fossil ginkgo leaves are included in the exhibition, on loan from the CU Museum of Natural History, in which some Earth Science faculty are also rostered.

“It’s exciting that the library is a place in which all these collections and creations can come together to tell a larger story about campus,” says Naomi Heiser, map librarian and one of the exhibition’s curators.

Whether in the trees that line the pathways, the birds that nest near academic buildings or the ecosystems that continue to thrive alongside a growing university, the exhibition highlights the many ways humans and nature have shaped one another across generations.

As visitors go down the stairwell at the Earth Sciences and Map Library, they will find a mirror surrounded by pictures of animals, lichen and plants around campus. In this mirror, visitors can see themselves amongst other creatures, reminding them of their place as a part of nature.

This immersive component was a goal Dr. Joanne Marras Tate, ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ�� alum, NEST curator and faculty support and engagement program manager at the SPIKE Center for Sustainability Education, had in 2019, when herself and two graduate student colleagues, Robert Martin Buehler and Mathew Sharples, created the “Campus Field Guide: Species Relationships at the University of Colorado Boulder.”

“‘Campus Life’ is a journey through space, time and ways of relating with the more-than-human world. The hope is that through the many facets of the exhibition, the field guide and the different events, that members of our community learn more about our shared and living spaces at ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ��—to know nature leads to care,” says Marras Tate.

The exhibition also invites members of the campus community to contribute their own stories and memories about encounters with the natural world on and around campus, creating a living collection of experiences that connects the past and present. You can submit your own oral stories here, where they will be stored through the library for the next 150 years.

Becoming citizen scientists through BioBlitz

On Sept. 22, the BioBlitz! iNaturalist Workshop invites participants to document biodiversity on campus using the open-data platform iNaturalist. The workshop begins with training led by Dr. Scott Taylor, professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and director of the Mountain Research Station. Participants will learn how to identify and record observations of plants and animals using iNaturalist, a platform that allows users around the world to contribute biodiversity data.

Earth Sciences & Map Library

Following the training session, participants will join a campus BioBlitz, working together to identify species in the area surrounding the Benson Earth Sciences building. Guided by Taylor and Marras Tate, attendees will contribute observations to a growing record of campus biodiversity.

The event directly connects the university’s history with its future. While the “Campus Life” exhibition looks back at 150 years of interactions between humans and nature, the BioBlitz generates new data that can help document the campus environment today. Participants become part of an ongoing effort to understand and preserve biodiversity, contributing information that may benefit future researchers, students and community members.

Participants are encouraged to explore the “Campus Life” exhibition before or after the BioBlitz, creating an opportunity to connect historical records of wildlife and landscapes with present day observations.

Wednesday, Sept. 30

Benson Earth Sciences

The final event in the series, Creature Crawl, takes place Sept. 30 as part of ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ�� annual Culture Crawl. Hosted by University Libraries in partnership with NEST Studio for the Arts and the Earth Sciences & Map Library, the event will feature local and ambassador insects presented in collaboration with Butterfly Pavilion.

Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about and engage with the creatures, and for those who are interested, even interact with them directly. The experience is designed to make the often-overlooked members of local ecosystems more visible and approachable while encouraging curiosity about the natural world.

Reflecting on the past, engaging with the future

While each event offers a distinct experience, together they tell a broader story about ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ�� relationship with the land. The exhibition documents 150 years of shared history, the BioBlitz captures the present state of campus biodiversity and Creature Crawl fosters a sense of wonder about the living communities that continue to call campus home.

As ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ�� marks 150 years of impact, innovation and community, these programs encourage participants to look beyond buildings and traditions and consider another enduring part of the university’s story: the interconnected network of people, plants, animals and ecosystems that have shaped campus for generations and will continue to influence it for years to come.

See ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ�� through a different lens—as a shared habitat where people, wildlife and the natural environment have shaped campus life for generations.
