On March 9, Chancellor Justin Schwartz spoke on the opening plenary panel, “20 Years In: Where Have We Been and Where Are We Going?”, at the Higher Education Climate Leadership Summit in Chicago. Hosted by Second Nature, with support from the Intentional Endowments Network, the Higher Education Climate Leadership Summit is the premier annual gathering of higher education leaders committed to addressing the climate crisis.

Here are three key messages from Schwartz.

Climate goals are being infused into everything in higher education, not just campus operations.

Twenty years ago, a campus sustainability office was considered innovative. Today, sustainability is increasingly embedded across the entire university system, from curriculum and research to campus operations and community partnerships.

At ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ��, that means integrating sustainability across academics, operations, research and community impact. The university’s first vice chancellor for sustainability, Andrew Mayock, is building on decades of campus leadership in sustainability to expand sustainability-focused degrees and programs and embed climate-related courses across the curriculum. Sustainability is also visible across campus operations, from energy-efficient building renovations to eliminating single-use plastic beverage containers and transitioning campus transportation toward electric buses.

Students are also driving this change. Surveys show sustainability is a major factor in where students choose to enroll, and today’s students expect clear climate targets, transparency and measurable progress.

Despite the current federal context, higher education institutions are stepping up on climate.

Universities have long operated across shifting political environments, but their core mission—to pursue knowledge and follow scientific inquiry—remains constant. Institutions continue to advance climate research and education, even amid policy uncertainty or fluctuating federal funding.

At ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ��, climate and environmental research remain central strengths, supported by world-class research institutes and partnerships with industry, government and local communities. These collaborations reinforce that climate research is not a political issue but one tied to workforce preparedness, innovation, resilience and economic opportunity.

New partnerships are accelerating climate innovation.

While funding disruptions and policy shifts create challenges, they are also prompting new partnerships and models for impact. Universities are increasingly collaborating with states, industry and philanthropy to accelerate innovation and collaborate on solutions to the most pressing challenge of our time: climate change.

At ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ��, for example, the university is working with partners across Colorado to support emerging industries like quantum technology and to help communities transition from fossil fuels to clean energy. Programs such as Boulder Climate Ventures are also helping students launch startups focused on climate solutions.

Ultimately, solving the climate crisis will require collaboration across institutions, sectors and disciplines. No single university can solve it alone, but by working together, higher education can help build the solutions and prepare the next generation to lead them.

Announcing the Carnegie Elective Classification for Sustainability

The chancellor also announced the opening of applications for the inaugural Carnegie Elective Classification for Sustainability, of which ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ�� is the host institution.

The Carnegie Elective Classification for Sustainability is designed to recognize and celebrate higher education institutions that demonstrate a commitment to sustainability and climate action as integral to their academic missions. The classification provides a rigorous framework for assessing and advancing sustainability efforts across curriculum, research, operations and community engagement.

As host institution, ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ�� provides the operational home for the initiative, supporting program management, application review and the development of a nationwide community of practice around sustainability in higher education.

Study on stress, coping

Are you a first-year student at ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ��? Interested in a research study on stress and coping in CU students?

The Research on Affective Disorders and Development Lab is conducting research on stress coping in first year CU students. We want to understand what helps CU students cope with stress during major transitions, including the transition to college and across semesters.

The study includes a few different parts that happen over the three-semester study period:

There are two in-person research sessions, each of which takes about four to six hours. During these sessions, you will play some computer games while we monitor physical functioning (for example, your heart rate). You will also complete a set of interviews and surveys that ask about stress, behavior, mood and health.
There are three 21-day periods in which we will send you a daily “micro survey” (less than five minutes to answer) asking about your behavior and mood using an app.
There are two one-hour online surveys that we will send to your email.

The study takes place over the course of three semesters, and you will be compensated for your participation (maximum of $446–$470 for completing all parts of the study). If you want to learn more, contact the RADD Lab at raddlab@colorado.edu or fill out the initial eligibility screening.

Study on music, the brain

Do you love listening to music? Are you curious about how your favorite music affects your brain? The Brain Music Lab at ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ�� is currently recruiting participants for a research study, Neural Mechanisms of Music Appreciation (��Ҵ�ý�ƽ�� IRB #25-0777), investigating favorite music listening and brain activity in young adults.

The total expected time commitment is approximately four hours. Research activities will take place over several weeks, according to your availability and the researchers’ availability. Participating in this study involves:

Completing an online survey (30 minutes)
One in-person visit to the Brain Music Lab (Roser ATLAS building) on ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ�� Main Campus (90 minutes)
A practice MRI session (30 minutes) and an MRI scan (90 minutes) at the Center for Innovation & Creativity (CINC), located just east of ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ�� Main Campus

Even if you enroll in this study, you may not qualify for all of these research activities. Individuals who complete parts one and two will be compensated with a $20 Amazon gift certificate. Individuals who also complete part three will be compensated with an additional $20 Amazon gift certificate, plus an image of their brain!

Study on visual memory

Research participants wanted! A study in the Institute of Cognitive Science is investigating the brain activity involved in encoding and retrieving visual memories.

Eligibility:

Right-handed
18–50 years old
No history of neurological disorders or brain damage
Vision that is normal or corrected-to-normal

The study involves one visit of two hours, including an MRI screening followed by memory tasks during an MRI scan. The scan duration is 90 minutes.

You will be paid $60. If your home address is more than 15 miles from the ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ�� scanner, we will pay an additional $15 for travel.

Study on mood, bipolar disorder in young adults

Join the Young Emerging Adult Research Study (YEARS) study at ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ�� and CU Anschutz (IRB# 23-2067) to understand emotions.

Earn $25 per hour (up to approximately $400 total) for up to three study session phases (one hour and 45 minutes). Must be 18–25 years, be able to attend in-person sessions, and have a personal history of bipolar disorder or no mental health history.

Hearing research

Participants are needed for a study investigating human hearing, conducted by Donghyeon Yun at ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ��'s Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences. This study involves listening to speech sounds through headphones and responding to them. It typically takes one session to complete, lasting 1.5 to two hours and can be scheduled at your convenience. You'll receive $30 in the form of an Amazon e-gift card for your participation.

Remote study on chronic back pain

Participate in a paid research study on the effects of virtual reality therapy on chronic low-back pain. Seeking participants ages 18–85 with low back pain for the last six-plus months for a research study with virtual reality ($132 compensation).

Study on women, PTSD

CU Anschutz researchers are looking for women who do and do not experience trauma-related nightmares to join a research study. The purpose of the DAWN Study is to understand how trauma-related nightmares impact heart health in women.

Qualifications:

Women 22–40 years of age
Do and do not experience repetitive nightmares related to prior traumatic experiences
No history of cancer, diabetes or cardiovascular/heart disease

Study on walking performance in older adults

Researchers from the Neurophysiology of Movement Laboratory at ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ�� are conducting a study to investigate the influence of light electrical stimulation (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) on walking performance in older adults.

Eligibility:

Individuals between ages 65 and 85
No recent lower-body injuries, free from neurological impairments
Able to walk unaided for six minutes

The study involves two evaluation visits to ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ�� Main Campus. The two sessions (each approximately 1.5 hours each) will be separated by three to seven days. Walking will be tested while transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is applied over leg muscles and controlled by a foot switch.

Want to see what your brain looks like?

The Intermountain Neuorimaging Consortium (INC) is a brain imaging research facility in the Institute of Cognitive Science at ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ��. They use MRI scans to study how the brain works and how the brain changes across the lifespan. They currently have six to seven studies that are looking for participants from a range of ages across the Denver metro area.

Physiology of aging studies

The Integrative Physiology of Aging Lab is recruiting for two studies:

Breathing exercise study

Researchers are looking for volunteers to study the potential healthy aging effects of a new type of breathing exercise (a time-efficient type of exercise), compared to brisk walking, on blood pressure and blood vessel function.

Requirements:

Ages 50-plus
Systolic blood pressure (top number) ≥ 115 mmHg
Willing to exercise up to 25 minutes per day, six days a week, for a three-month period

Participants receive:

Detailed blood panel (cholesterol, glucose, etc.)
Physician-monitored exercise stress test
Blood pressure screening
Bone mineral density test
Monetary compensation for time

Researchers are seeking volunteers to participate in a clinical research study.

Ages 40-plus
Willing to participate in 12 weeks of hot tub sessions, approximately three times per week

Sleep studies

Study on sleep, peripheral circadian clocks

The purpose of the Biomarkers of Peripheral Circadian Clocks in Humans study is to examine how light exposure and meal timing influences circadian rhythms in healthy people ages 17–40.

The study is seven weeks long with eight in-person visits at ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ��. Participants live in the sleep laboratory on two separate occasions for 7.7 days (15.4 days total).

Compensation is up to $4,093.

Study on delayed sleep-wake phase disorder

Do you have trouble falling asleep before 1 a.m.? Do you find it difficult to wake up early in the morning for your commitments? Does your high schooler have a hard time falling asleep before 1 a.m. and waking up early in the morning/for high school?

Researchers are looking for people with delayed sleep-wake phase disorder or people with late bedtimes, or healthy people with typical bedtimes.

You may be eligible for this study if you:

Are ages 16–30
Have a diagnosis of delayed sleep-wake phase disorder or have late bedtimes after 1 a.m., an inability to fall asleep and difficulty awakening when required for school/work
Are healthy with typical bedtimes and no sleep concerns

The study is 6.5 weeks long with six in-person visits and will include:

Health screening
Monitor on separate occasions your sleep, mood, eating times for one or two weeks and blood sugar levels while living at home
Live in the sleep laboratory on two separate occasions for 48-66 hours (approximately 4.87 days in total):
Blood and saliva sampling
Reaction time, mood, and ability to think testing

Compensation is up to $1,750.

Looking to add some color to go with your graduation gown? The tradition of additional regalia accessories have special meaning and represent various aspects of a student’s involvement or achievement.

The colored stoles, also sometimes referred to as sashes, can symbolize participation in campus activities or groups. There are also first-generation stoles for first-generation graduates and legacy cords for students whose parents, stepparents or grandparents attended ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ��.

Colored cords often represent academic honors, military service and specific academic fields. Learn more about the cord and stole colors that CU graduates are wearing today.

Think you qualify for a cord or stole?

Visit the academic dress page and contact the issuing unit via weblink in description for details on any cords or stoles. Contact your academic college or school for further information on academic honors medals.

What are cords and what do they signify?

Typically, cords are rope-like strands that are worn on graduation day to indicate a specific affiliation, legacy or academic achievement tied to your degree.

How do I pick up my cord?

This process varies from unit to unit, and pickup is different for each one. You will be contacted by your issuing unit if you qualify for an officially recognized cord. If you’d like more clarification on when and how you will receive your cord, please contact the issuing unit.

Is there a cord for my minor?

��Ҵ�ý�ƽ�� does not recognize every academic minor with a cord at graduation. Check the academic dress page for cords officially recognized by ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ�� commencement committee.

Stoles

What are stoles and what do they signify?

Stoles are sash-like garments that highlight a student's affiliation with a club, organization or community during their time at ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ��. Many graduates also represent their college or school by purchasing a degree stole at the CU Bookstore to wear for graduation. Significant academic achievement and affinity stoles are also available.

Cultural and affinity commencement stoles

Graduating students can register to receive complimentary cultural & affinity commencement stoles for any of the groups they identify with through the ��Ҵ�ý�ƽ�� Alumni Association in Partnership is campus groups, departments and clubs.

Registration is now open. The deadline to register is April 30, and pickup will be at the Koenig Alumni Center during regular business hours between March 23 and April 30. If you have further questions, please email contactalumni@colorado.edu.

Honors requirements vary by college and school. If you meet the requirements for your college, school, or honors program please reach out to your dean’s office, advisor or program. They will clarify how medals are handed out and if there's an honors component to your unit recognition ceremony.

Students are notified about honors medals from their college/school/program.

Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai will close the Conference on World Affairs (CWA) 2026—and you are invited to join this powerful conversation.

Happening Thursday, April 16, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Macky Auditorium, the talk will explore the themes of leadership, hope, resilience and impact. Stefanie Johnson, director of the Center for Leadership and professor of organizational leadership and information analytics at the Leeds School of Business, will moderate the discussion.

As CWA prepares for the event, the student community is invited to be a part of the conversation by submitting questions for Yousafzai with the opportunity to have their question asked live on stage by Johnson. Students whose questions are selected will receive a reserved ticket to the event; will be credited by name, year and major; and will receive a copy of Yousafzai's latest book “Finding My Way.”

In this talk, Wren Suess, assistant professor of astrophysics, will dive into one of the biggest surprises from the James Webb Space Telescope so far: the discovery of enormous quiescent galaxies astonishingly early in cosmic history.
