Fall 2025ÌýBFA External °ä´Ç³¾³¾¾±³Ù³Ù±ð±ðÌý·¡±ô±ð³¦³Ù¾±´Ç²Ô²õ

The below nominees will be voted on by BFA Representatives by Qualtrics Ballot from September 17th-24th. Results will be posted on September 25th.Ìý

BFA Academic AffairsÌý

I want to support the university's efforts to maintain the rigor and quality of our academic programs while facilitating an outstanding classroom experience for both students and faculty. I would bring into this role a background of teaching experience across grad and undergrad programs and service in multiple roles within my school—including current work on the Leeds Major Curriculum and Programs Committee (MCPC).

I previously have served as a non-voting consultant on BFA’s Academic Affairs Committee.Ìý Serving as a voting member would be an honor.Ìý Thank you for your consideration.

I am strongly moved to run for this committee due to its involvement with current college affairs in generative AI challenges and adoption, among many other issues affecting my dept and the school. I have direct experience with this through my current courses at ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½Æƽâ°æÏÂÔØ, as well as prior admin roles at RIT. I am also very interested in quality control and micro-credentials, being one of the faculty invested in the MS-online program in the College of Engineering.

Having served at a departmental level on an undergraduate curriculum committee, I have observed first-hand the relationship between departmental level, and campus level ideas about curriculum. I believe as an Associate Teaching Professor from CMDI, I could add a valuable perspective to this committee.

I am interested in serving on the Academic Affairs Committee because of my extensive experience with curriculum development and academic policy. I served for six years on the Curriculum Committee at Valencia College, where I focused on program review, prerequisite alignment, and student learning outcomes. As a faculty librarian and doctoral student in curriculum and instruction, I bring both practical committee experience and a student-centered, data-informed perspective to issues such as accreditation, micro-credentials, and the common curriculum.

Ìý

BFA Administrative Appraisal CommitteeÌý

I am interested in serving on the Administrator Appraisal Committee because I value transparent, constructive feedback processes that strengthen leadership and support faculty success. My background includes years of faculty service on committees focused on policy, evaluation, and continuous improvement, where I consistently emphasized fairness and inclusivity. I would bring a thoughtful, data-informed perspective to refining evaluation procedures and ensuring that faculty voices are represented.

In 2024, I served as the Chair for the University Libraries Dean's Evalution Committee. This work has prepared me for the evaluation of our campus administrators that the AAPC undertakes. In that role, I worked closely with the Provost's Office to develop a clear set of procedures and have consulted with several other colleges on how to conduct their own evaluations. In developing the Libraries procedures and chairing the evaluation process I made certain that our procedures were well documented to avoid reinventing the wheel for the next review. Further, I clarified the rational of the review, its purpose and outcomes, why it is conducted in the manner it is, while also clarifying the need for confidentiality that aligns with HR processes. While serving on the AAPC, I hope to bring the same clarity to the committee's procedures that ensure a well-informed review process.

Ìý

BFA Budget & Planning CommitteeÌý

I was Executive Director of CU Engage for the past 5 years. During this time, I learned a great deal about campus budget policies and processes. Serving on this committee is a great opportunity to both learn more and guide the future direction of the campus (hopefully).

I am a longtime member of the ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½Æƽâ°æÏÂÔØ faculty and wish to serve on the Budget &ÌýPlanning Committee because it engages with a range of issues important to faculty. I am especially looking forward to having a role in formulating faculty communication with the campus Administration.Ìý

In my role in the Libraries for the past 10 years I have been responsible for acquiring library resources which includes managing over $15M in expenditures annually across general, gift, grant, and auxiliary speedtypes. I am familiar with the new campus budget model, and believe my expertise on campus fiscal policies and processes could be of value to this committee. I have a strong commitment to the fiscal sustainability of this University to continue its mission now and in the future.

I am a faculty member in the School of Education and serve as the Faculty Director of our MA in Higher Education program. I also served on our School of Education budget committee for several years and was part of our recent Budget Sustainability Task Force. I strongly believe that budgets represent values. The upcoming budget model revision process offers an opportunity for us to consider the aims of a comprehensive, public university, and to reevaluate how our budget model can better serve those aims.

I have previously served a 3 year term on the Budget & Planning Committee and have other budgetary experience
through having served as a department chair for 5 years. ÌýI believe that the current budget model is having
a number of negative unintended effects that should be addressed, particularly in the context of attacks on higher education

Ìý

BFA Campus Operations & Resources CommitteeÌý

As a CMCI/CMDI professor of almost 10 years, I get the space problems we have on campus, and my work on the Strategic Facilities Visioning Committee informs a practical, equity-minded approach to space allocation and safety. As a computational social scientist who teaches across units in dozens of different classrooms, and relies on a wide range of academic software, and pushes University IT to the brink, I can translate faculty needs into clear guidance for SRS, especially around information technology projects that affect day-to-day teaching, research, and mentoring.

I am interested in serving on the Campus Operations & Resources Committee because I see strong connections between campus operations and the overall faculty and student experience. My background includes extensive committee service focused on policy, curriculum, and student support, where I have consistently worked to bridge communication between faculty and administration. I would bring a collaborative, solutions-oriented perspective to issues such as campus infrastructure, IT projects, and wellness initiatives that directly affect teaching, learning, and community life.

As a bus commuter, I care deeply about reducing our carbon footprint, but also making temporary parking more readily available to faculty who choose to primarily rely on public transit and other alternative transportation modes.

Ìý

BFA Faculty Affairs Committee

As a Faculty Fellow in OFA, I am interested in helping to facilitate conversations between BFA and OFA.

I am interested in serving on the Faculty Affairs Committee because I am deeply committed to fair, transparent policies that support faculty in their teaching, research, and service. My experience includes years of faculty governance and committee work focused on evaluation, curriculum, and policy, as well as ongoing doctoral research on equity and access in higher education. I would bring a balanced, collaborative perspective to reviewing faculty rights and responsibilities while ensuring policies promote both accountability and support for colleagues across disciplines.

Ìý

BFA Grievance Advisory CommitteeÌý

I have served on this committee in an interim capacity since Spring 2025. The work that the committee engages in is crucial for faculty feedback during PRR and other processes, and I would like to continue to build on the experience I have gained already.

Ìý

BFA Intercollegiate Athletics CommitteeÌý

I am interested in serving on a BFA Standing Committee because I want to be more engaged with campus governance (as I was as a ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½Æƽâ°æÏÂÔØ grad student). I am interested in the IAC Standing Committee because it aligns with my personal experience with sport and intercollegiate athletics.

Athlete well-being is my academic specialty within the field of psychology, and I would enjoy the ability to be a part of a committee who supports our student athletes. I am familiar with the committee's work on both recommendations for improvement and compliance issues, and I especially appreciate the different voices who are encouraged to work together towards a common goal. I was introduced to the committee last year and saw the great work being done with sub-committees and would like the opportunity to have a more formal contribution.

Last academic year, I attended several of the Intercollegiate Athletic Committee's public events and found them to be really eye-opening. Particularly, former Faculty Athletics Rep Joe Jupille's session, who drove home the point that our student athletes are some of our highest performing students. They are alo very public representatives of our institution and need our support. These sessions really helped me to see the extent to which athletics are intertwined with the University—even the academic side, which some faculty don't like to acknowledge. There are many changes swirling around college athletics including NIL, compensation, student athlete unionization efforts, psuedo-free agency, and more. It would be an exciting and fascinating time to be a member of this committee, and I believe the work on IAC would address these challenges ahead that will affect the entire university. If elected, I would look to strike a balance between advocating for our student athletes' well-being and fair conpensation with the economic realities of "Big Time" college sports.

I am a CU Professor (Anthropology/Museum Studies) that regularly teaches athletes in my classes. In college, I was an NCAA scholar-athlete (football) for 4 years, and my graduate training was supported by an NCAA Postgraduate Scholar award. I care a lot about the role of athletics in our academic mission, and also am a huge fan and season ticket holder of our many CU sports teams.

Last year, I was invited to informally join the ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½Æƽâ°æÏÂÔØ IAC and within it I am serving in the CACS committee. I have loved every minute of it, as it brings together all I love: students and sports. I would be honored if you’d allow me to formally serve in the Committee. I am a former student athlete myself. After that, I went on to higher education and to a successful career in academia and government. After many years, I was finally able to carve myself a role at the intersection between academics and athletics. A certified ski instructor and coach, my experience across the two worlds was pivotal in co-founding and directing the Alta Badia International Ski Academy. My expertise in writing and managing grants helped me create networks about the relations between athletics and academics. Two of the project I run, DC4SKI and Promoting education and skills development in Alpine skiing (ESKI), focused on best practices for student-athletes. Promoting gender equality and women empowerment is another major focus of my work. Thanks Title IX, NCAA teams are as diverse as they can be, but there is still a lot of work to do for the letter of the law and the reality on the ground to match. EWAS (Empowering Women in Alpine Skiing) - of which CU and former head coach Richard Rokos are both part - and The State of Women - Sports both aim to empower female athletes to have, if they so desire, leadership roles in sports in their post-collegiate lives. As a faculty member deeply committed to fostering academic excellence, student well-being, and institutional integrity; I am excited about the opportunity to serve the community in this role, working to strengthen the intersection of academics and athletics, and ensuring alignment with the university’s mission and strategic priorities. I would be happy to answer any questions you may have.

As director of critical sports studies I already have a close working relationship with athletics and I have a deep understanding of intercollegiate athletics. I served on IAC previously before leaving to take care of my father. I hope to use that experience to support and serve the committee.Ìý

I have served on the IAC committee since 2023 and have found it to be an enriching experience. I was voted in as the co-chair of the IAC at the end of the 2025 spring semester and would like to serve in this role in an official sense.

BFA Student Affairs Committee

"Maureen has shown unwavering commitment to the well being of her students. She innovates inclusive teaching practices and is proactively engaged with reducing barriers to learning and student success. She believes that contributing to this committee will help expand her reach outside of her classroom." -Submitted by Maureen Bjerke's nominatorÌý

I am applying to serve on the Student Affairs Committee because I am committed to advancing student success. I believe we can best support our students by promoting evidence-based pedagogical practices that foster deeper learning, strengthening community, especially for students from marginalized backgrounds, and proactively addressing the growing mental health challenges they face.

I regularly collaborate with members and staff of Student Affairs and greatly value those connections. My work with engagement programming that promotes well-being and belonging aligns a great deal with the work of Student Affairs. I would value the opportunity to gain greater insights that might reveal additional ways to support, collaborate, and elevate the work of student affairs. Further, I am very invested in supporting and learning more about campus student well-being initiatives given the mental health crisis many universities are experiencing.

I am interested in serving on the Student Affairs Committee because I am deeply committed to advancing student success, equity, and well-being. As a librarian, I have spent my career designing inclusive learning experiences, building partnerships with faculty, and supporting diverse student populations both inside and outside the classroom. I would bring a student-centered perspective and collaborative spirit to the committee’s work on belonging, wellness, and removing barriers to success.

"James was a new member of the Student Affairs Committee last year. He quickly stepped up and became an invaluable contributor, supporting colleagues and students alike. He is excited to continue advocating for student success on the BFA SAC this year." Submitted by nominatorÌý

CU Faculty SenateÌý

CU Faculty Senate Grievance CommitteeÌý

I have served on and/or chaired CMDI's grievance committee for five years and I really enjoy policy and procedure, helping others to find solutions. I have a deep commitment to ethical leadership and institutional integrity, and I think the grievance process is important to ensure fairness in decision-making.

CU Faculty Senate Educational Policy & University Standards Committee (EPUS)

I am interested in serving on the Educational Policy and University Standards Committee because of my background in curriculum development, policy review, and student-centered teaching. I have served on committees focused on academic standards and program alignment, and my doctoral research in curriculum and instruction further informs my ability to evaluate and recommend policies that strengthen learning and teaching. I would bring both practical committee experience and a collaborative perspective to the committee’s work on academic and procedural standards.

CU Faculty Senate Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender & Queer+ Committee

I believe strongly in supporting the LGBTQ+ community and see this as an opportunity to continue my support. I look forward to learning from the members of this committee and being able to help/contribute in some way.

Fall 2025ÌýBFA Internal °ä´Ç³¾³¾¾±³Ù³Ù±ð±ðÌý·¡±ô±ð³¦³Ù¾±´Ç²Ô²õ

The below nominees were voted on by BFA Representatives by Qualtrics Ballot on September 4th.

BFA Budget & PlanningÌý

I have a longstanding interest in institutional budget and finance issues that stems, in part, from my research and experience in business and tax law and my experience in mid-size grant management. If I am elected to this committee, one of my priorities for 2025–26 is to increase knowledge about issues involving the new limitations on federal loans for graduate education.

I am very interested in helping with budget planning and pushing forward the mission of campus budget transparency.

I previously served as Chair of A&S Budget Committee, served on AABAC/ARMAC in the past, served on Design Committee for campus budget remodel, and served on BFA Budget and Planning Committee.Ìý

Ìý

BFA Climate Science & Education Committee

My teaching within Environmental Studies and the Master of the Environment program often focuses on climate science research. I am always looking for ways to connect my classroom content to tangible action in the local community.

My research area is ocean and climate, and I've been teaching climate-related courses, including a course related to climate and policies. I am certainly interested in serving on the committee to learn the committee's effort and to contribute to the committee.

I am eager to contribute to the ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½Æƽâ°æÏÂÔØ Faculty Assembly Subcommittee for Climate Science and Education to advance collaborative strategies that integrate climate research with interdisciplinary teaching and community engagement. My work in ecological design and biogenic materials positions me to help bridge research, pedagogy, and applied solutions that foster climate literacy and resilience across campus and beyond

I am interested in joining the Climate Science and Education Committee because of my long-standing commitment to sustainable design and my collaborative work with the campus community to advance environmentally responsible practices. I’m excited by the committee’s interdisciplinary approach, bringing together science, research, education, and operational departments, to reduce ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½Æƽâ°æÏÂÔØ carbon footprint and promote climate-conscious decision-making.

Ìý

Ìý

BFA Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Committee

My academic research considers issues of diversity and equity in K-12 bilingual settings and teacher education. I have prior experience working on this committee. I believe in this current political moment this committee's work is crucial.

I'm encouraged that the committee is keeping its name and holding fast to its mission and goals. Too often, ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½Æƽâ°æÏÂÔØ and the CU system's answer to attacks on DEI, equity, and academic freedom to research and teach DEI-focused topics (as I do) has been to lay low and change names or make facile "everyone is included" statements. I'd love to see if this committee could be a force and resource for holding firm to these values and resisting linguistic or actual dilution of them out of fear or an unwillingness to offend/attract attention.

I am committed to fostering equity and inclusion, and helping to ensure that the university maintains this investment, particularly given the present political climate. I am trained in Ethnic Studies and I work in Women, Gender, & Sexuality Studies, and have a record of investment and qualification in helping to meet these goals.

I am interested in serving on the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion Committee (DEIC) because diversity, equity, and inclusion have been lifelong priorities in both my personal and professional life, values that are urgently needed in today’s academic and social climate. I’m committed to helping create a campus culture where all faculty can thrive, and I believe in actively addressing structural inequities through inclusive policy, representation, and collaboration.

Ìý

BFA Faculty Affairs Committee

I have previously served on this committee and would be interested in serving again (after being term limited off after AY 2023-24 and being away for a year).

As a junior tenure track faculty member, I think it will be in the interest of both the committee and myself to understand better and have fresh perspective towards establishing the appropriate rights and responsibilities for faculty personnel.

Ìý

BFA Grievance Advisory Committee

I'm interested in serving on the Grievance Advisory Committee because I believe that having a fair and robust grievance process is central to faculty governance

Ìý

BFA Student Affairs Committee

I'd like to be more involved so that I can better understand how to support the students I teach. These young people are navigating an ever changing and challenging world. They need to leave our university with the ability to not only be active participants in but to thrive. The student affairs committee serves as a foundation of support, one that I'd appreciate being part of.

Spring 2025ÌýBFA OfficerÌýElections

The below nominees were elected by BFA Representatives at the May 1 Assembly meeting. Please join us in congratulating them on their new roles! Ìý

BFA Chair Nominees

I am running for BFA Chair, because I believe my experience with faculty governance, both at the campus and system levels, and my commitment to advocating for faculty at all levels can serve the BFA well in a challenging time, which is also one of transition for the organization. I have served the BFA for twelve years and the Faculty Council for four years. I was Chair of the BFA Faculty Affairs Committee for six years, and have been BFA Vice Chair and chair of the Bylaws Committee for the last three years. I have been Faculty Council Chair for two years, and a member of the EPUS committee for four years. I am especially committed to advocating for equitable treatment (including compensation) of all faculty members, including non-tenure track faculty. I am also committed to doing whatever we can to protect the most vulnerable members of our campus community (faculty, students, and staff) at a time when higher education is increasingly subject to external threats, and some groups in particular are being singled out for particularly egregious persecution.Ìý

BFA Chair Elect Nominees

I currently have healthy working relationships with CU administrators at all levels and with the BFA officers, who have consistently been a source of knowledge and inspiration.Ìý The next few years will be a little bumpy, not only due to the external factors disrupting higher education in general but also because we will be experiencing a higher-than-usual loss of institutional knowledge due to early retirements.Ìý In addition, the new organizational structure of the BFA will require some patience on everyone’s part as we address the challenges that arise.Ìý This situation will involve the need to minimize the small differences that might divide us in order to remain strong and coordinated during a difficult period.Ìý

I have previous experience serving on BFA Budget and Planning Committee for four years and as co-chair of the BFA Climate Science and Education Committee for the past two years.Ìý I also have served previously as a representative to the ASC (now ASFS) and on Faculty Council, where I served as Secretary from 2021-2023.Ìý That service provided me with experience related to bylaws and elections, which occupies the attention of all BFA officers.Ìý

In the coming years, I look forward to exploring ways to enhance the attractions of BFA service for ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½Æƽâ°æÏÂÔØ faculty.Ìý We will surely need to be unified and organized as we navigate the upcoming challenges.Ìý

BFA Parliamentarian & Bylaws and Elections Chair Nominees

I would be honored to serve as the BFA Parliamentarian, and I am eager to contribute to this important work. The BFA has recently made significant strides in updating its bylaws and committee charges, and the upcoming years will likely focus on ensuring these updates are functioning as intended. Where necessary, I am committed to collaborating with the Bylaws and Elections Committee, as well as the other executive officers, to address any issues and bring about necessary adjustments. If appropriate, we will make additional changes, as needed and voted on by the BFA.

At a time when academia and American society at-large are facing unprecedented challenges, we must stand united in the face of uncertainty and adversity. As these threats to our ability to carry out our mission continue to grow, it is essential for the Executive Officers—and BFA representatives more broadly—to remain vigilant. In this position, I will work closely with fellow Executive Officers and university officials to ensure ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½Æƽâ°æÏÂÔØ remains steadfast in defending our values and thriving through these difficult times. This is work I am deeply passionate about and committed to pursuing.

Faculty Shared Governance Advisor Nominees:

I think this role is important because I feel that higher education is facing a crucial period with the advent of the second Trump administration, which may lead to increased stresses on campuses, faculty, and collaboration between campuses and their faculty and staff. We are facing unprecedented threats to academic freedom and free inquiry, and thus we should all contribute to a unified campus and national response to these issues, while at the same time, faculty should be prepared to defend their specific interests directly as well.

Qualifications: I have had a long commitment to faculty shared governance. I served as a BFA representative in the early 2000s for several years, and chaired the Academic Technology Committee for part of that time, and thus served on the BFA Executive Committee. More recently, as an Arts and Sciences Faculty Senate representative, I chaired the Arts and Sciences Budget Committee for several years, and in that role, also served on the BFA Budget and Planning Committee. Finally, I chaired the ASFS during 2023-25, and in that role, also served on the BFA Executive Committee. I have also chaired three different A&S departments in two different divisions, and directed the Center for Native American and Indigenous Studies for two terms — a unit which reports to the Graduate School and draws participation from multiple schools and colleges on campus. I also was the A&S faculty representative to the Budget Redesign Committee, which worked on the details of the new campus budget model, and I have served on or chaired search committees for the A&S Dean and the Vice Chancellor for Native American Affairs.

2025 At-Large Assembly representative election results

Please join us in congratulating and welcoming these two faculty members at incoming BFA At-Large Assembly Other Units (Non-A&S) representatives:

Angie Chuang - Associate Professor, Journalism - CMCI

"Faculty voice, faculty governance, and academic freedom are more precarious and urgent than ever in these troubling times. I am running to ensure CMCI/CMDI and CU faculty are heard in how we want our institution and leadership to resist attacks on higher education, diversity, and the rights of more-vulnerable university community members, such as immigrants and transgender people. My scholarship and my decade-plus of professional journalism experience, focused on race and identity issues, represent the distinct mix of research and creative work of CMCI-ENVD faculty and provide context to engage the current crises confronting higher education."

David Hekman - Associate Professor, Organizational Leadership and Information Analytics - Leeds School of Business

"I’m running for reelection to the Boulder Faculty Assembly to continue the progress we’ve made on behalf of student athletes. Serving on the BFA Intercollegiate Athletic Committee, I’ve focused on student diversity, academic rigor, mental health resources, and concussion support, especially during the transition from the student-focused PAC-12 to the new conference. I’d like to keep advocating for solutions that benefit not only student athletes, but the broader ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½Æƽâ°æÏÂÔØ community."
