Loans

Students are funded through the following types of loans:

Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans

The University of Colorado participates in the William D. Ford Direct Loan program (Direct Loans). The lender is the U.S. Department of Education rather than a bank or other financial institution. You are automatically considered for a Direct Loan after submitting your FAFSA.

Federal Graduate PLUS Loans

The Federal Graduate PLUS Loan is available only to students who are classified as Returning/Continuing Borrowers. If you previously borrowed a federal loan while enrolled in your current degree program at ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ÆÆ½â°æÏÂÔØ, legacy provisions should allow you to continue borrowing the Grad PLUS loan up to your full cost of attendance after July 1, 2026 for up to three years.Ìý

**Legislation taking effect July 1, 2026 eliminates the Graduate PLUS loan program for new borrowers.Ìý

Private (Alternative) Loans

Private student loans or alternative loans are available to students who are not eligible for federal loans or who need assistance beyond their financial aid eligibility. These loans are made through banks and other financial institutions and are subject to their terms. Colorado Law’s Office of Financial Aid helps students find resources to make law school affordable throughÌýscholarships, fellowships, and federal and private student loans.

Non-residents may establish residency after 1 year.
