Assistant Professor Ambrocio Gutiérrez Lorenzo Receives SSCI Divisional Grant
Congratulations to Linguistics Assistant Professor, Dr. Ambrocio Gutiérrez, along with ProfessorDoris Loayza from the Latin American and Latinx Studies Center and Dr. Leila Gómez from the Department of Women and Gender Studies, for receiving aSSCI Divisional Grant. Their interdisciplinary proposal, titled “Creating a trilingual thematic dictionary for Zapotec and Quechua,” aims to create a digital thematic dictionary to support the teaching of Central Quechua and Central Zapotec varieties. The dictionaries will be trilingual for each language (Zapotec-Spanish-English and Quechua-Spanish-English). The project will begin summer 2026 and conclude spring 2027.
As explained in their proposal, the dictionaries will have a great impact:
Zapotec—spoken mainly in Southern Mexico—and Quechua —in the South American Andes, are languages also spoken in communities of migrants and their descendants in the United States. Since Spring 2021, the Southern Quechua variety has been taught at Ҵýƽ by Loayza, who has developed a curriculum and teaching material for the Southern variety. However, no variety of Central Quechua has ever been taught at a US University, and no English language materials have been developed for this variety... The dictionaries will be extremely helpful to instructors and students for class activities and assignments.
