Space Policy Certificate

The Vision

One of the major goals of the CSPC is to engage and educate students in the field of space policy. To do so, we plan to implement a Certificate of Space Policy into ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½Æƽâ°æÏÂÔØ's existing course structures, bridging the gap between technical aerospace expertise and the complex world of global governance.

The certificate seminar will be offered each Spring on Friday afternoons as a weekly two-hour course exploring the most pressing issues in space policy. Each session will focus on a different topic and will be led by an invited subject-matter expert, allowing participants to engage directly with individuals at the forefront of their fields. Along with having a lecture component, the seminar will also include discussion where participants will have the opportunity to contribute and engage with each other as they answer discussion questions prompted by the lecturer. By bringing together experts with diverse perspectives and experiences, the seminar will provide participants with a broad understanding of the complex policy, legal, technical, and societal issues shaping the future of space activities.

The seminar will then culminate in a three-day, project-based capstone held during the Summer at the University of Colorado Boulder. Working in small teams, participants will investigate a contemporary space policy challenge by examining its historical development, current state, and ongoing efforts to address it. Each team will present its findings and recommendations to the rest of the cohort, fostering discussion and collaboration across a range of backgrounds and perspectives.

Capstone projects are centered on timely issues facing the global space community. For example, one team might evaluate the Artemis Accords, identify areas where the existing framework could be expanded, and propose new international agreements to support future space exploration. Another project could examine strategies to mitigate orbital debris and promote the long-term sustainability of Earth's orbital environment.

Program Status: Under Development

Please note that the Certificate of Space Policy is currently in the development and proposal phase. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the work we do, we are working closely with various departmental leads to ensure the curriculum meets the highest standards of academic rigor and relevance.
